Best Maternity Style of 2011 Award – Jessica Alba

In 2011 we saw more celebrity mothers-to-be than ever before.

Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Selma Blair and Bryce Dallas Howard were just a few who were showcasing their maternity style on the streets and on the red carpet, but it was Jessica Alba whose style you loved the most.

Atelier Versace gowns, empire-waist frocks, brightly colour-blocked Diane von Furstenberg dresses, Dolce & Gabbana animal-print maxis, Lanvin separates and a D&G floral dress, which is still my personal favourite, put an impressive spin on maternity style.

Not an oversized sweater nor baggy pair of sweats was in sight.

Runner up: Victoria Beckham.

Who Wore McQ Better? Emma Watson or Chloe Moretz

Emma Watson wore this cute plaid McQ tartan wool puffball mini dress to the GQ Men Of The Year Awards which was held at The Royal Opera House in London early last month.

Her hair and makeup were kept light and youthful as she added a pair of Christian Louboutin Spike pumps to spice up her look.

On the red carpet she wore this dress with an edgy biker jacket.

Chloe Moretz wore the same dress just four days later when she attended The Independent Filmmaker Project during the 2011 Toronto Film Festival.

Her look was styled with black heels worn over black socks.

It’s ironic how Emma, who’s older than Chloe, appears to be younger.

Emma wins for me as I love the tulle tutu she wore under her skirt to give it more volume and give her overall look more personality.

You can buy Emma’s and Chloe’s dress from Net-A-Porter International.

Evan Rachel Wood In Dolce & Gabbana – “True Blood” Season 4 Premiere

Evan Rachel Wood attended the “True Blood” Season 4 Premiere last night, which was held at the ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, California.

I LOVE this look.

Evan is one of the few young starlets in Hollywood who steps out of the ‘mold’ and consistently keeps things interesting on the red carpet.

Her Dolce & Gabbana grey pants and vest look was teamed with a fresh new ‘boy band’ haircut and red suspender braces.

I love how this look strikes the perfect balance between masculinity with alluring femininity. As Steven Tyler would say, “dude looks like a lady.”

The key to this look is part confidence, part fearless attitude, plus the aid of a good (hair, make-up & clothing) stylist.

I was quite obsessed with this whole look head-to-toe, but the leopard print back doesn’t quite work for me.

This is surprising considering my obsession with animal print.

Jimmy Choo Balance patent-leather mesh pumps plus Dana Rebecca Designs and C. Greene jewels completed her look.

Claire Danes In Valentino – 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

It was hard to miss Claire Danes at the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party last night in West Hollywood.

It’s no surprise that she chose Valentino – one of the actress’ favourite designers – for the biggest night in Hollywood, but this bright pink colour is not something we’d expect from the actress who tends to favour minimalist looks.

Her Valentino Pre-Fall 2012 gown features sheer, polka-dotted overlay exploding into a tiered, riffled skirt.

This stand-out gown comes dangerously close to looking a bit Barbie princess, but I think the almost-neon pink is a brilliant choice and looks stunning on Claire.

Her styling is flawless, with a slightly messy hairstyle and light pink makeup.

The look is finished with Tiffany & Co. earrings and a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet.

Lana Del Rey In Prabal Gurung – The Q Awards 2011

Lana Del Rey attended the Q Awards earlier today in London.

The young singer wore a Prabal Gurung Resort 2012 floral print dress to collect her ‘Next Big Thing’ Award at the ceremony which was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

If you’re feeling a slight sense of déjà vu, that’s because Sarah Jessica Parker wore a lookbook version of this dress whilst attending a photocall in London last month.

Lana teamed her slash neck, ¾ length sleeve dress with white brogues and large hooped earrings.

The side swept hairstyle, inspired by Salvatore Ferragamo and Betsy Johnson’s Spring 2012 runway shows, continues to be a current hot carpet hairstyle trend.

Paris Menswear: Codebreaking At Junya Watanabe, Comme des Garçons

The experience of watching a show by Rei Kawakubo or her protégé Junya Watanabe is akin to being given a code to crack, hardly a challenge which presents itself very often in the fashion arena. And that’s why I could reel away from today’s shows in Paris with a sense of achievement. I cracked the code! It mightn’t have been their code, but it sure worked for me. The first clue is always the invitation. Junya’s featured a tripartite photographic exposition of America’s military might. Think about it—that was the average Japanese family’s introduction to the West after World War II. Next clue: music. Junya’s was Charlie Parker’s be-bop. Now you have to imagine jazz as the sound of democracy. Then came the clothes that go with the freedom. At an average fashion show, the pork pie hats, shades and narrow black ties might be set aside as stylists’ flourishes, but here they were finishing touches to outfits that starred the slender tailoring of Parker and his cohorts, emphasised by attenuated silhouettes. Rebirth of the cool? “This is a man” was the theme of the show. It was a real Junya moment.

Mama Rei’s invitation was a plain time and place backed by a sturdy piece of card. Protective? Well, that was a giveaway. The color palette of dun military shades suggested the uniforms of men who are paid to protect society’s values at home and abroad, the shorts over pants were not a new silhouette for Comme but the fact that the shorts were buckled like kilts said “warrior” to me (and probably to ancient armies in the Scottish Highlands). Those same buckles appeared on the sturdy bulletproof-like vests that were shown under tailored jackets. The curious padded sections on those jackets could be construed as coinciding with the vital organs that lay beneath them, just like the knee, elbow and shoulder quilting. Phew! These are clothes, Jim, but not as we know them. Once your mind locks into this conceptual groove, it’s hard to trip yourself out of it. I was imagining the bearish fur coat as being a wrap for the kind of man who might need the protection the rest of the collection was pointing to (i.e. a Russian oligarch). Fortunately, the immortal Alfred Hitchcock had a paraphrase-able response. Ingrid, it’s only a fur coat.To see all the photos from the Fall 2010 menswear shows, download our iPhone app here.

Michelle Watch: Another Maria In The Obama Closet

And the information keeps rolling in from what we’d now like to start calling the Best Inauguration Ever—especially for fashion wonks like us. It seems that Michelle Obama has another Maria in her life in addition to her longtime go-to Pinto: Maria Cornejo. Mrs. Obama has apparently been wearing pieces from Cornejo’s avant-elegant line for some time on the campaign trail and to wisecrack with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. On Saturday, she wore a royal purple jacket in double-faced wool jersey (pictured here) custom made by Cornejo for the whistle stop train ride from Philadelphia to Washington but that’s not likely to be last we’ll see of Michelle in Zero. A spokesperson for the designer tells us that Cornejo has designed a whole range of pieces “specifically tailored” for Mrs. Obama: eight jewel-toned suits, two winter coats and three dresses.

Brian Reyes: City of Angels to City of Light

Before heading to Paris for sales meetings, Brian Reyes and his newish team, including first-ever president Stephanie Cozzi, went west for a trunk show at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, his exclusive stockist in L.A. The designer is lowering his prices for Spring and the collection benefited from the welcome boost. It’s no surprise, then, that Reyes and co. were all in excellent spirits at a dinner last night in the designer’s honor. Reyes was thankful for the moment of respite with friends like Tracee Ellis Ross and stylist Nicole Chavez. “Nicole was one of the very first people to support me out here,” said Reyes. “She actually went into Barneys and bought my dresses as soon as they first had come out.” Here’s to guessing which one of Chavez’s well-dressed starlets will be wearing Reyes’ bleeding-heart print first. We hear it’s going to be big for Spring.

“The Joneses” LA Premiere – Rumer Willis In Jill Stuart

Rumer Willis joined her mother on the red carpet for the LA premiere of “The Joneses” last night.

The actress looked great wearing a Jill Stuart Fall 2010 asymmetrical mini dress.

When I saw that Rumer and the model were wearing the dress in opposite directions, I started to obsessed about who wore it the right way, but it looks good on both of them so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Rumer paired her multi-print mini with a black clutch and black Gucci ‘Sigrid’ heels with harness details.

Not so crazy about the hair, but this is a good look for Rumer.
